Molly F. Greene - Living a Life of Purpose - Water Mission

March is women’s history month, and as a woman-owned business, we wanted to highlight and honor a very inspirational woman in our local and global community. Molly F. Greene was the co-founder, chair, and chief stewardship officer of Water Mission – a Charleston-based Christian engineering nonprofit that builds safe water, sanitation, and hygiene solutions in developing countries and disaster areas.
Molly and her husband, George, were inspired to take action after the devastating effects of Hurricane Mitch in 1998 on the country of Honduras - the 2nd poorest country in the Western hemisphere. Their mission started after visiting the country and seeing first-hand the struggle for access to clean water. The nearby river ran deep brown with toxins & bacteria and referred to locally as the “River of Death,” as no one survived after drinking from it. The Greenes worked tirelessly to provide the community with a life-altering water purification & treatment system. It was after this eye-opening experience that Molly and George decided it would be their life’s work to combat the global water crisis, that so sadly affects 2.2 billion people across the world.
Since it’s founding in 2001, Molly inspired all those involved in Water Mission by her example of faithful stewardship.  She was the first to pray “over details big and small, leading with humility and modeling values of love, excellence, and integrity” said Jen McHugh, vice president of volunteer and investor partnerships. Molly encouraged those around her that they could make a difference by simply taking action. Water Mission hosts many events throughout the year, including their 15th annual Walk for Water, inspired by those throughout the world who walk miles each day to gather water for their families. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, March 20th, at Riverfront Park in Charleston, SC, or virtually at a location and time of your choice. By participating, you are helping Water Mission and their efforts to provide access to life-altering water systems to communities in need. To participate, please sign-up here.
Sadly, Molly passed away on July 17th of 2019, after a tragic accident. Forever inspired by their fearless and compassionate leader, the entire Water Mission’s team vows to “continue in our work of bringing safe water and Jesus’ love to all, we hold Molly dear to our hearts and we walk the way Molly walked: through faith and not by sight. We celebrate her legacy and rejoice that she is now face-to-face with Christ.” Molly’s family and Water Mission have invited all to their Living a Life of Purpose celebration, honoring Molly F. Greene on Thursday, March 18th, at Seacoast Church in Mt. Pleasant, SC.
Shrimp & Grits Kids will also be donating a portion of the sales from all items in our Charleston Blue Crab & Fishy Fishy collections in Molly’s honor to Water Mission’s initiative to supply global communities with safe water. We hope that Molly’s story and impact on the world will inspire all to recognize each of our abilities to change the world for the better.
